West Lafayette, IN – Over 2,200 wines traveled to West Lafayette for one of the nation’s largest wine competitions, the Indy International Wine Competition, July 30 through August 1, 2014 at Purdue University.
Wines from 40 states and 11 countries as far away as France, Australia, Spain and Greece were judged on appearance, aroma, taste, and aftertaste by 45 international judges.
The Wine of the Year award was given to Klinker Brick Winery, Lodi, CA, for their 2012 Old Ghost Zinfandel, besting over 2,200 other wines to be named the best wine of the entire competition. Red Wine of the Year honors was given to Ghost Pines Winery, Healdsburg, CA for their 2012 Merlot. White Wine of the Year honors was awarded to Saint Croix Vineyards of Stillwater, MN for their 2013 Vignoles. Rosé Wine of the Year was awarded to Carlos Creek Winery of Alexandria, MN for their 2013 Frontenac Rosé.
The Sparkling Wine of the Year was awarded to Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards of Sonoma, CA for their 2003 Carneros Cuvee and Debonné Vineyards of Madison, OH took the Dessert Wine of the Year honors for their 2013 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.
Purple Toad Winery of Paducah, KY won Fruit Wine of the Year for their Lauren’s Blackberry wine.
Dr. Konstantin Frank of Hammondsport, NY was awarded the Winery of the Year Trophy. The trophy honors the Best International Brand of the entire competition.
Bill Gulvin of Nissley Vineyards, Bainbridge, PA state won the Winemaker of the Year Trophy, honoring the vintner who wins the most gold medals by brand at the competition.
Sharrott Winery of Blue Anchor entered this year’s Indy International and was awarded 1 Double Gold, 1 Gold, 5 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals.
The Indy International Wine Competition has been organized by the Purdue Wine Grape Team since 1992, and for the past eight years under the leadership of Professor of Enology Christian Butzke. “The more than two thousand wines entered in the 23rd INDY are a true reflection of the amazingly diverse offerings that the global wine market provides to American wine lovers who now consume more wine than any other nation in the world. Our 45 professional wine judges represent the general public’s taste in wine, and their recommendations provide great guidance among the dizzying array of choices in the grocery store, online wine shop, or restaurant”, said Dr. Butzke.
New awards this year included Wine Packaging Design of the Year and Wine Label Design of the Year. They were won by Illinois Sparkling Wine Company of North Utica, IL and Cades Cove Cellars of Townsend, TN, respectively.
